Dua for New Year: 7 Authentic Duas (Arabic, Urdu & English)

Dua for new year in Arabic with English and Urdu translation on an Islamic crescent design

Quick Answer: What Is the Dua for New Year?

The best-known dua for the new year is the one the Companions (Sahabah) used to learn whenever a new month or year began: Allahumma adkhilhu ‘alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, wa jiwarin minash-shaytan wa ridwanin minar-Rahman. It asks Allah to bring the year with security, faith, safety, Islam, protection from Shaytan and His pleasure.

A new year feels like a clean page. Many Muslims want to start it with a dua, but they are not sure which words are authentic. This guide gives you the dua for the new year in Arabic, with transliteration, Urdu and English meaning, plus six more short duas from the Quran and Sunnah that you can recite at the start of the year. Everything is explained in simple words with its source.

In this guide you will learn:

  • The authentic dua for the new year and what it means
  • Whether Islam gives a specific dua for 1 Muharram
  • 7 duas in Arabic, Urdu and English with sources
  • When and how to recite them
  • The date of the next Islamic New Year

You can also keep all your daily supplications in one place on our Duas & Azkar page.

Is There a Specific Dua for the Islamic New Year?

No dua has been narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that is only for the Islamic New Year. What we do have is a dua the Companions used to learn at the start of every new month or year, and the dua the Prophet ﷺ made when he saw the new moon. Both are general duas, and Muslims recite them at the start of Muharram.

This is the clear position given by Hanafi scholars who answered this question. They explain that in the time of the Prophet ﷺ, the first of Muharram was not treated as a “new year day” as people do today. The narration of Abdullah ibn Hisham (RA) speaks about a new month and a new year together, so the dua is for the beginning of any month, including Muharram.

What does this mean for you?

  • You can recite the Companions’ dua at the start of the year. Just do not present it as a dua that is only for 1 Muharram.
  • You can add any other authentic dua you like, in Arabic or in your own language.
  • Greeting each other and praying for blessings at the start of the year is fine, as long as nobody treats it as a religious obligation. This is the view in a fatwa of Darul Ifta, Jamia Uloom Islamia Allama Yusuf Banuri Town, Karachi.

If you want a ruling for your own situation, please ask a qualified scholar.

1. Dua for a New Month or New Year (Companions’ Dua)

Transliteration: Allahumma adkhilhu ‘alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, wa jiwarin minash-shaytan wa ridwanin minar-Rahman.

English meaning: “O Allah, bring this (month or year) upon us with security and faith, safety and Islam, protection from Shaytan and with the pleasure of the Most Merciful.”

Urdu meaning:

Source: Abdullah ibn Hisham (RA) reported that when the Companions entered a new month or year, they would learn this dua the way they learned the Quran. It is recorded in Mu’jam al-Sahabah by Baghawi and by Tabarani.

Why it is special: It asks for five things in one sentence: safety, faith, protection from Shaytan, Allah’s pleasure and a year free from fear. If you only learn one dua for the new year, learn this one.

2. Dua on Seeing the New Moon (Muharram Crescent)

Transliteration: Allahumma ahillahu ‘alayna bil-yumni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, Rabbi wa Rabbukallah.

English meaning: “O Allah, make this moon rise over us with blessing, faith, safety and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.”

Urdu meaning:

Source: Jami’ at-Tirmidhi. The Prophet ﷺ used to say this when he saw the new crescent. Recite it when the Muharram moon is sighted. For the Urdu name of this dua, people also search “naya chand dekhne ki dua”.

3. Sayyidul Istighfar (Dua for Forgiveness and a Fresh Start)

English meaning: “O Allah, You are my Lord. None has the right to be worshipped except You. You created me and I am Your servant. I keep Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have done. I admit Your favour upon me and I admit my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.”

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari. The Prophet ﷺ called it the best way of asking forgiveness. He said that whoever recites it with firm belief during the day and dies that day before evening, or recites it at night and dies before morning, will be among the people of Paradise.

Why it fits the new year: The year is a good time to look back, admit mistakes and ask for a clean start. You can also read about other authentic words of remembrance in our guide on dua after salah.

Checklist of 7 authentic duas to recite at the start of the Islamic new year

When and How to Recite the New Year Dua

You can recite these duas at any time, but the best moments are after the obligatory prayers, in the last third of the night, and when you first see the new moon. There is no fixed number of times and no special night that Islam requires for them.

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Make wudu and sit calmly. Facing the Qibla is recommended.
  2. Begin with praise of Allah and send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ.
  3. Recite the Arabic slowly. If you cannot read Arabic yet, read the transliteration and learn the words little by little.
  4. Understand the meaning. Read the Urdu or English line so your heart is present.
  5. Ask in your own words too. Mention your health, family, rizq and forgiveness.
  6. End with salawat and Ameen.

If you are making an important decision for the new year, such as a job, marriage or move, also pray Istikhara. See our guide on Dua e Istikhara with Arabic text and method.

Six steps to make dua at the start of the Islamic new year

When Is the Islamic New Year?

The Islamic New Year begins on 1 Muharram, the first day of the Hijri calendar. The Hijri year follows the moon, so it moves about 10 to 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year. The exact day depends on moon sighting in your country.

Hijri yearIslamic New Year (1 Muharram)
1448 AHTuesday 16 June 2026 in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. Wednesday 17 June 2026 in Pakistan
1449 AHExpected around 5 to 6 June 2027, subject to moon sighting

Always confirm the date with your local moon sighting announcement.

Why Muharram Is a Special Month for Dua

Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran in Surah At-Tawbah (9:36). The Prophet ﷺ also said that the best fasting after Ramadan is in Allah’s month of Muharram (Sahih Muslim). Fasting on the day of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, is a Sunnah, and the Prophet ﷺ said it expiates the sins of the previous year (Sahih Muslim).

Many Muslims use this month to:

  • Ask for forgiveness and renew their intention
  • Read more Quran. You can read the Manzil online or download the Manzil PDF for daily protection
  • Keep optional fasts, especially on 9th and 10th Muharram
  • Give sadaqah and spend time with family

Dua for the 1 January New Year

Islam does not give a separate dua for 1 January. The duas in this article are not tied to a calendar date, so you can recite them on any day, including the start of the Gregorian year. Use the day to ask for forgiveness, health, halal rizq and steadiness in your deen, and stay away from celebrations that include sins. If you are unsure about a custom, ask a trusted scholar.

6 Simple New Year Resolutions for Muslims

A dua works best with action. Pick two or three of these and start small:

  • Protect your five prayers. Pray each one on time.
  • Read some Quran every day. Even one page counts. Start with Surah Al-Fatihah and learn its benefits.
  • Listen and learn. Use our Quran audio hub while commuting.
  • Say istighfar daily. Begin with Sayyidul Istighfar from this page.
  • Learn one new dua each month. Twelve duas in a year is a real achievement.
  • Give regular sadaqah. A small fixed amount is better than a large rare one.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dua for New Year

What is the dua for the new year?

The best-known dua is the one the Companions learned for the start of a new month or year: “Allahumma adkhilhu ‘alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, wa jiwarin minash-shaytan wa ridwanin minar-Rahman.” It asks Allah for security, faith, safety, Islam, protection from Shaytan and His pleasure.

Is there a specific dua for the Islamic New Year in the hadith?

No. No dua is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ only for the Islamic New Year. The Companions’ dua is for the start of any new month or year, and the Prophet ﷺ taught a dua for seeing the new moon. Muslims recite both at the start of Muharram.

What is the dua for a new month?

When you see the new moon, you can say: “Allahumma ahillahu ‘alayna bil-yumni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, Rabbi wa Rabbukallah.” It means: O Allah, make this moon rise over us with blessing, faith, safety and Islam. It is reported in Tirmidhi.

Can Muslims say “Happy New Year” or greet each other?

Greeting at the start of the year is not established as a Sunnah. Some scholars say there is no harm in kind words and a dua for blessings if nobody treats it as a religious duty. Avoid customs that go against Islam, and ask your local scholar if you are unsure.

Which dua should I read for forgiveness at the start of the year?

Read Sayyidul Istighfar, which the Prophet ﷺ called the best way of seeking forgiveness. You can find its Arabic, transliteration and meaning in dua number 3 above.

When is the next Islamic New Year?

1 Muharram 1449 AH is expected around 5 to 6 June 2027. The exact day depends on moon sighting in your country, so check your local announcement.

Final Words

The dua for the new year is simple: ask Allah for safety, faith, forgiveness and His pleasure, and then work for it all year. Start with the Companions’ dua, add Sayyidul Istighfar, and keep a few of the other duas on your phone or in your Manzil routine.

May Allah make this year a year of mercy, guidance and ease for you and your family. Ameen.
